About
A major-project consultancy, established in 2017.
We provide project and programme delivery, project controls, and commercial and supply chain services, supported by training and capability development, across nuclear, defence, energy and infrastructure.
Who we are
Our practitioners participate in client teams rather than sitting outside them as advisors. We integrate, understand the problem, take ownership and stay involved through implementation, using client budgets responsibly and focusing on the activity that actually improves the project.
We are headquartered in Wigan and work internationally, with over 100 years of collective delivery experience across nuclear, defence, energy and infrastructure.

What we stand for
How we behave on a project.
Five principles we work by.
We integrate
Our people work inside the client team, not alongside it, taking ownership of the problem rather than reporting on it.
We challenge constructively
Open, honest reporting. If something is not working we will say so, and then help fix it.
We stay through implementation
Recommendations are the easy part. We remain involved while the intervention is delivered and measured.
We think commercially
Advice tailored to the project and the client: reducing risk, avoiding unnecessary cost and using client budgets responsibly.
We improve performance
Every engagement is judged on whether the project is measurably better for our being there.
How we work
Consistent management, adapted to every project.
We bring consistent management to all our work, adapting our approach to the specific project, client and environment.
-
Understand
We take time to understand your business, requirements and values before proposing anything.
-
Assemble
We bring together the right talent from our in-house team and carefully selected specialist associates, based on our professional experience and judgement.
-
Integrate
We integrate with your wider professional team, or fulfil the employer’s requirements in-house.
-
Control
Robust schedule, cost and risk data drives decisions and keeps accountability visible, increasingly supported by advanced analytics and project intelligence.
-
Improve
We learn from experience, then adapt and update our approach to improve future delivery and outcomes.
Our people
Who you’ll work with.
Our people combine strong technical skillsets with the professionalism and relationship-building that complex projects demand. We look beyond technical capability when building our team, using psychometric profiling alongside our own professional judgement to understand individual strengths, working styles and how people complement one another.

Strategic technology partnership
The Herne Group × Nodes & Links
We combine deep nuclear, defence and major-project delivery expertise with Nodes & Links’ purpose-built schedule intelligence platform. Nodes & Links is not a general-purpose AI tool applied to project data. It is built on project controls foundations, schedule logic and programme analysis.
Nodes & Links provides
Advanced project and schedule intelligence technology, designed to understand critical path behaviour, schedule dependencies, risk exposure, float movement and sequence logic, with transparent, traceable reasoning that can be presented to auditors, client assurance functions and regulators. No black-box outputs.
The Herne Group provides
The sector knowledge, project controls expertise, implementation capability, governance, challenge and practical intervention required to convert that intelligence into project outcomes.
“There is no other software out there that allows us to interrogate a live programme in this way and quickly identify where intervention is possible, where delivery performance can be improved, and where recovery and acceleration opportunities genuinely exist.”
Andy Garnett, Project Controls Director, The Herne Group
“Nodes & Links is effective at project, programme, and portfolio level. It is a genuinely strategic P3M tool that provides the visibility and intelligence needed to support delivery across complex organisations and interconnected programmes.”
Gareth Weigh, Commercial Director, The Herne Group
“The Herne Group offers a powerful view of the future of project controls: experienced professionals using auditable AI to investigate more options, understand the consequences and make stronger decisions. We’re proud to support that work on live, high-stakes project environments.”
Greg Lawton, CEO and Co-founder, Nodes & Links
